Iran has begun direct test flights to Venezuela as they combat the U.S.-led blockade imposed on both countries.

The Islamic Republic of Iran announced on Monday that they have begun direct test flights to the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.

Spokesman of Iran's Civil Aviation Organization Reza Jafarzadeh said that test flights from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport began flying directly to Caracas this morning, as reported by the Mehr News Agency.

Jafarzadeh said Iran's Mahan Airlines took off from Tehran with the Iranian Foreign Minister's aide and the director of the Foreign Ministry Department for the Americas, Mohsen Baharvand, and his delegation on board.

Baharvand is heading to Venezuela to meet with several officials in Caracas to discuss the ongoing situation in the South American country.

The flights from Tehran to Caracas would be around 16 hours long.

Not everyone was happy to receive this news; among those dissatisfied with the announcement was U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.

In a tweet on Monday, Rubio said, "Unless Iran has suddenly become a major source of international tourists this is yet another reason why the #MaduroRegime is a national security threat to the U.S."

Rubio has actively spoken out against the governments of both Venezuela and Iran on a number of occassions in the past.
