The accident occurred at about 5:23 p.m. local time on Tuesday, just three minutes after the Boeing 727 aircraft took off from German Olano Airport. It crashed in a field in the municipality of Puerto Carreño, about 10 miles from the runway.

A total of six crew members were on board the aircraft, of whom only one survived. Authorities identified those killed as captain Jaime Cantillo, copilot Mauricio Guzman, flight engineer Pedro Duarte, flight dispatcher Felipe Vargas, and operator Nelson David Rojas.

The Civil Aviation security secretary, Fredy Bonilla, said that the plane was allowed to fly despite being an old model aircraft manufactured in the 1970s.

Experts have to verify if the aircraft, property of Aerosucre, was carrying more than the 20 tons allowed at the time of the flight, which they say that could have been the cause of the accident.

Tuesday's accident comes less than a month after LaMia Flight 2933 crashed in northwest Colombia, killing 71 people, including most of the Brazilian Chapecoense soccer team.
