International Community Rejects Intervention in Venezuela

The international community has rallied behind Venezuela after the United States announced sanctions against President Nicolas Maduro.

Syria’s Foreign and Expatriates Ministry congratulated Venezuela on the success of the Constituent Assembly and criticized the United States for trying to interfere in the electoral process.

“Syria condemns all foreign attempts aimed at meddling in (Venezuela’s) affairs and disrupting its stability,” a ministry source told Syria's media agency SANA.

Cuba also criticized U.S. actions against Venezuela, describing them as an “international plot to suppress the will of the Venezuelan people in the wake of U.S. sanctions.”

"We know well these interventionist practices," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a public statement, referring to the economic blockade imposed on the Caribbean island by the United States estimated to have caused more than US$100 billion in losses.

“Nothing can stop a people from owning their destiny,” the statement continued. “Enough of interferences, of secret meetings, of betrayals to the Bolivarian spirit.”

The Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity joined Cuba in condemning international interference in Venezuela’s political situation.

“We not only recognize the results and the more than 8 million votes of the Venezuelan people, but also condemn all attempts, past and future, to destabilize the legitimate government led by Nicolas Maduro,” the organization published in a statement Monday.

Russian Senator Vladimir Yabarov reiterated Russia’s support for President Maduro, highlighting the hypocrisy of sanctioning Maduro while ignoring human rights abuses in U.S.-allied states.

In an interview with Sputnik, he raised the question, “If you are sanctioning because of violation of democracy, why aren’t you sanctioning Saudi and the Gulf monarchs?"

While the governments of Colombia and Mexico have failed to recognize the results of the Constituent Assembly, leaders within those countries have expressed their support for President Maduro.

Ivan Marquez, leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, spoke out against the media misrepresentation of the crisis in Venezuela.

“I’m outraged by the Colombian media that every day lies and misinforms about what is happening in Venezuela,” he wrote in a message on Twitter.

A poll by Parametría also found that 64 percent of respondents believe Mexico should not get involved with the internal affairs of Venezuela.

The messages of support come as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pushes for dialogue and an end to Venezuela’s violent street protest.

According to U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric, Guterres, “is convinced the only way forward is a political solution.”
