The girl suffered burns to 95 percent of her body.

A 15-year-old girl was left in a critical condition after being raped and set ablaze in her family home in the outskirts of New Delhi.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man, Ajay Sharma, for allegedly raping and attempting to burn the girl to death in Tigri village, near the New Delhi suburb of Noida in the state of Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, according to constable Yadram Singh of Bisrakh police station.

Singh said the man "had severe burns on his hands." The victim suffered burns to 95 percent of her body and is fighting for her life in hospital.

Singh’s report also tells of how the girl’s parents found her with severe burns on the rooftop terrace of the house, where Sharma had arranged to meet her, after they heard screaming.

Rape is endemic in India. On Monday, three men were arrested after a woman resorted to jumping from a two-storey house in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata (Calcutta) to escape rape, police said.

The woman attended a party at the house, where the three men allegedly attempted to rape her after spiking her drink, reports said.

She is currently recovering from a head injury.
