More than 200 people were injured and there are reportedly several collapsed bridges as well as electricity outages and roads blocked by debris.

Officials also said the number of casualties is expected to rise since some areas remain inaccessible following the 7.0-magnitude quake. Nugroho, in a news conference, said there was “massive” damage in the northern region of the island.

"People panicked and scattered on the streets, and buildings and houses that had been damaged by the previous earthquake had become more damaged and collapsed," Sutopo expressed.

More than 200 people were injured and there are reportedly several collapsed bridges as well as electricity outages and roads blocked by debris. The quake struck at a depth of 10.5 kilometers. Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics said that more than 120 aftershocks were recorded after Sunday's quake.

A tsunami warning was initially issued but lifted late Sunday after only small waves were recorded.

The island was also hit by a 6.4-magnitude tremor last week, resulting in the deaths of 17 people and damages to hundreds of buildings.

Lombok is known for pristine beaches and mountains.

Indonesia is located on the dreaded “Ring of Fire” arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In December 2004, a devastating 9.1- magnitude Banda Aceh earthquake – off Indonesia's Sumatra island – triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people.
