Francisco Eguiguren, the president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in Argentina, said jailed Indigenous activist and lawmaker, Milagro Sala, should be allowed to leave the prison as her health continues to deteriorate.

"The harassment due to excessive vigilance, disciplinary processes, a multitude of judicial processes, has created a picture of stress that affects her mental and moral integrity, and that generates a dangerous picture for her life and integrity, so the commission concludes, without going through the processes, that her permanent presence in prison puts her life in severe danger," Eguiguren explained.
The chair of the IAHCR also added that the trial should be continued either out of jail in a house arrest or under a controlled release arrangement.
Eguiguren stated that her release is important as a precautionary measure so that the human rights defenders can analyze the condition of the Parlasur (the Parliament of the South American trading bloc Mercosur) representative.
Eguiguren further emphasized, "The Commission recommends that if she (Milagro Sala) is still subject to the trials, the proceedings must be carried out in house arrest or in freedom with restrictive measures such as electronic bracelets, but not inside the jail."
Last year, the United Nations demanded that the government release Sala, while the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention described her incarceration as "arbitrary.”
