The 16-year-old girl suffered first-degree burns to 70 percent of her body after she was set on fire in a village in the Pakur district of Jharkhand Friday, police authorities said.

Fifteen people have been arrested from a village in Chatra district Saturday in connection with the alleged rape and murder case Friday, the Hindustan Times reported.

The family members said the eighth-grade student was abducted from her cousin's home and gang-raped Thursday night. And the main suspect in her murder who was given the mild punishment of 100 sit-ups and a fine of US$750 for raping the girl the night before was enraged at the punishment when he decided to set fire to the girl he just raped.

She is being treated at a hospital in Berhampur, West Bengal. This is the second case recorded of a minor being sexually assaulted and set on fire in Jharkhand this week.

The perpetrator, Bacchan Mondal, also attacked the girl's family and set their home on fire with a teenager inside. A special investigation team is probing that case, according to a senior police officer.

"A team of police officers has been constituted and has been sent to Berhampur in West Bengal where the girl is undergoing treatment at a private hospital for recording her statement," Shrawan Kumar, a police officer said, according to the Hindustan Times.

"The case has been handed over to Indu Sekher Jha, inspector-cum-officer-in-charge of Sadar police station for further investigation. A case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act besides other relevant sections of IPC has also been filed with the Mufassil police station."
