It is the first time in history the National Border Patrol Council has officially thrown its weight behind a presidential candidate.

A U.S. Border Patrol agents' union is endorsing Republican frontrunner Donald Trump for president, making its first-ever endorsement in a presidential election.

The National Border Patrol Council, which represents 16,000 border patrol agents around the country, appreciates Trump's path away from the current political system and praises his stance on immigration.

The union itself walks an extremely hard-line on immigration issues and touted Trump in a letter on Wednesday as a "break from the perfect Washington-approved tone."

The billionaire Republican, who has promised to build the "biggest, most beautiful wall" between the U.S. and Mexico, has also won the union's support thanks to his "personal success," his disdain for political correctness and because he is "angry for America."

"We need a person in the White House who doesn't fear the media, who doesn't embrace political correctness, who doesn't need the money, who is familiar with success, who won't bow to foreign dictators, who is pro-military and values law enforcement, and who is angry for America and NOT subservient to the interests of other nations. Donald Trump is such a man," the union said in a statement.

The letter also reads, “It is those without political power — the workers, the law enforcement officers, the everyday families and community members — who are supporting Mr. Trump,” ignoring the fact that most unions have in fact thrown their support behind one of the two Democratic candidates.

The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO), representing a total of 12 million American workers, including the national union of the border patrol council, has called Trump an "anti-American bigot."

The only other labor group that has formally backed Trump is the New England Police Benevolent Association, another law enforcement union.

Since launching his campaign, Trump has spouted anti-immigrant rhetoric. He recommended banning Muslims from the U.S. and has called undocumented Mexican immigrants "rapists," among other comments.

In a statement, Trump called himself "deeply privileged" to get the union's endorsement. "This endorsement represents a total rejection of the corrupt politicians who have allowed transnational gangs and cartels to terrorize American communities," he said.
