Grenada Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has just announced that fresh general elections will be held March 13.

Grenada Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has just announced that fresh general elections will be held March 13. The PM made the announcement this evening at a rally for his ruling party, the New National Party (NNP).

Dr. Mitchell has held his seat since 2013 when in the previous general election, the NNP swept parliament winning all 15 seats enabling him to replace the former PM, Tillman Thomas of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

March 13 marks a historic date in Grenada history. On that day in 1979, the New Jewel Movement (NJM) headed by Maurice Bishop, who sought labor rights, gender equality and to end racism and apartheid on the Caribbean island ousted the then prime minister Sir Eric Gairy from office. Bishop was eventually deposed of and executed with the support of the U.S.’s Operation Urgent Fury.

Mitchell reiterated tonight what he has said since the beginning of November - he’s confident the NNP will maintain parliamentary control and he’ll regain his office for a second term.

The Grenada County Election Commission says that voter registration is surprisingly low this election cycle. The five-person commission is in the process of confirming addresses for all island voters.

“This is very important. If you have moved recently, please update your voter address information,” said Election Commission Chairman Wanda Ward. “Your opportunity to vote in future elections could be affected if you are not registered in the correct district.”

In previous months Mitchell was also insistent that Grenadines register.

“We are preparing for the general elections, there is no big mystery about this…get registered! Get ready, it’s coming soon,” he told people at a November rally.
