Following Trump's Trail, Guatemala to Move Embassy to Jerusalem

As the world leaders and a vast majority of UN members condemned the U.S. decision of moving its embassy to Jerusalem,  Guatemala has decided to move its embassy to Jerusalem as well.

The right-wing president of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, confirmed the decision on Sunday. 

"Today I spoke with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, we talked about the excellent relations we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the State of Israel" and the main theme "was the return of the Guatemalan Embassy to Jerusalem," Morales wrote on his Facebook account. 

Morales said he asked the foreign minister, Sandra Erica Jovel Polanco, "to initiate the respective coordination to make it so." 

Guatemala and Honduras were the only two Latin American countries that voted against the UN resolution which condemned and annulled Trump's decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem. 

The U.N. members at the General Assembly also overwhelmingly voted against the U.S. President Donald Trump's enraging decision and passed a resolution reversing Washington's unilateral decision to declare Jerusalem the Israeli capital with 128 votes against the U.S. declaring Jerusalem as Israel's capital, despite U.S. threats against the voting nations.

In the extraordinary session convened by the Arab countries, the resolution received nine votes against and 35 abstentions. 

Mexico which abstained from the UN vote on Jerusalem did not refrain from showing disdain towards Trump's decision. 

"Mexico does not see it as positive or useful for a unilateral declaration to have taken place to recognize Jerusalem as the capital," Mexico’s ambassador, Juan Jose Gomez Camacho,  said, the Washington Post reported. 

Calling it "authoritarian," Bolivia's Evo also condemned Trump's decision, saying the move "violates international rights and provokes more instability in that region."

"In the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization, the empire has been defeated. Their threats and arrogance have not been able to break the world's support for the Palestinian cause," Morales said after the vote.

Hours earlier, Bolivia's president tweeted, "The United States of America believes itself to be the world's boss, threatening to jot down the names of countries that reject its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," noting that his nation "has no fear."
