The Nicaraguan government announced the first woman, Miriam del Socorro Morales, to reach the level of colonel in their country.
On Wednesday, Nicaraguan First Lady Rosario Murrillo introduced Miriam del Socorro Morales as the first woman in the country's history to reach the rank of colonel in the national army.
The First Lady said, "We are very proud as Nicaraguan women to have Miriam del Socorro Morales as the first Colonel in Army history and also head of the Center History of the Army."
She went on to stress the revolutionary history of Col. Morales who was a member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) during the Somoza dictatorship. Morales joined the FSLN in 1976, going underground under the pseudonym of Idania. The recently elevated Colonel was wounded in combat as part of the guerrillas.
