Local media reported that the blast appeared to have been caused by an explosive device planted two blocks away from the Plaza de Toros in Bogota.

A strong explosion Sunday in central Bogota near the Colombian capital's Plaza de Toros, also called La Santamaria, injured at least 10 police officers, local media reported.

Authorities responded to the incident with police squads and anti-explosive dogs on the scene to sniff out other possible devices in the area.

Police were already patrolling the area before the blast in preparation for bullfighting event scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

Bullfighting, outlawed in Bogota in 2012, recently returned to the Colombian capital amid protests that argued that the spectacle is a brutal blood sport. Anti-bullfighting activists have clashed with police in recent weeks during demonstrations against the move to bring back the controversial shows.

Police have reportedly cordoned off the area to avoid further incidents as authorities investigate the explosion.
