People are bravering the freezing weather to honour the memory and legacy of the man who survived more than 600 assassination attempts from The Empire.

Even the United States mourned and honored the death of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, as dozens of people dropped by the Cuban embassy on Saturday to offer flowers and to hold a minute of silence in his name.

Amid posters of the legendary leader plastered all over the gates of the embassy, people from different nationalities took flowers in respect since the morning all the way till night, when a vigil was held. Not even the cold weather deterred a “steady stream” of people from paying their respects, reported Sputnik.

“We are here to mourn the loss of one of the greatest revolutionary leaders of the world history and to celebrate his life, and...achievements," James Ploeser, a volunteer with the Latin-American and Caribbean Action Network – one of the organizers – told Sputnik. "Fidel is exactly the sort of example we need in the U.S. right now in the age of Donald Trump coming."

The move is significant as Fidel has survived over 600 assassination attempts from the U.S. government and nearly a dozen presidents from that country.

Some extremist and reactionary forces – particularly Cuban emigrants living in Miami – have also celebrated his passing. But their voices have largely gone unheard in the face of the overwhelming love and admiration Fidel’s legacy has garnered.

Actions and events in his name are already being prepared in countries around the world.

A funeral ceremony has been arranged for December 4, at which time Fidel’s ashes will be interred at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in Santiago de Cuba.
