President Rafael Correa’s party issued a statement demanding that OAS head Luis Almagro stops illegal interference in Venezuelan affairs.

Ecuador’s ruling party Alianza PAIS issued a statement late Saturday rejecting the position of Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, against Venezuela and insisted that he puts an end to any interventionist expression against the South American nation.

The political movement demanded Luis Almagro to "stop acting as a political opponent and act as a real Secretary of the OAS, which respects the sovereignty and legitimate international instruments in our countries," the statement read.

The statement comes less than a week after Almagro invoked the OAS Democratic Charter against Venezuela, which could lead potentially lead to the suspension of the Caribbean country from the inter-American organization.

However, the leftist alliance in Ecuador warned that Almagro's actions were in violation of the sovereignty of Venezuela and its constitution as well as the articles of the OAS Charter itself.

Moreover the statement condemned "the international media smear campaign on Venezuela, which seeks to manipulate public opinion and legitimize any neo-colonialist and anti-democratic measure against the Chavista government of Nicolas Maduro."

Finally, the movement reiterated its support for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the government of President Nicolas Maduro as well as all the progressive forces in the country and the Venezuelan people themselves.

The statement from Ecuador’s Alianza PAIS came less than a day after Cuban President Rafael Castor also expressed his support for the Venezuelan government, calling the OAS “an imperialist instrument."

On Wednesday the OAS’s Permanent Council unanimously adopted a resolution opposing intervention and encouraging dialogue between lawmakers in Venezuela after the head of the regional bloc moved to invoke the so-called Democratic Charter against the South American country.
