Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno met with the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon, in a move that signals Ecuador’s deepening ties with the United States.

During the meeting in the capital of Quito, Shannon highlighted "the common interests that drive the relationship between the peoples of the United States and Ecuador.”
The leaders talked about strengthening the two countries’ bilateral relationship, as well as increasing collaboration in areas of mutual interest. The National Assembly of Ecuador also said in a statement that there will be further cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, as well as combating drug trafficking.

Moreno said later on his official Twitter account, "In a meeting this morning with the Assistant Secretary for Political Affairs of the United States, Thomas Shannon, we discussed all the points of (our) common agenda. With great cordiality, we have resumed a relationship that will be beneficial in many areas.”
Shannon’s South America visit will also take him to Colombia and Chile.
