Correa announced Tuesday that he is removing himself from Alianza Pais, the leftist movement he founded in 2006, Associated Press reports.

More than two dozen other leaders and lawmakers are also resigning from the party, including Mauricio Proaño, Liliana Duran and Esteban Melo.

"Today, in the 11th year of the Citizens' Revolution, the gift of the traitors is the theft of Alianza Pais," Correa posted on Twitter.

"They can rob us of Alianza Pais, but never our will and convictions. Despite the pain, this only strengthens us."

The announcement is being described as part of the latest conflict between Correa and the man he chose to succeed him and continue his "Citizens' Revolution."

The departing faction intends to start a new party called Citizens' Revolution, the phrase Correa often uses to describe his socialist movement aimed at reducing the nation's inequality.

President Lenin Moreno has fallen out of favor with Correa since his election last year. Moreno has pushed through a national referendum, due next month, to vote on a measure that would make it impossible for Correa to run for president.

Deputy leader Elizabeth Cabezas has cautioned that the resignations will trigger changes in the structure of Ecuador's parliament.
