Former President Rafael Correa, speaking exclusively to teleSUR, has denounced the political prosecution against him and his supporters in Ecuador specifically, but also reflected on the broader context of what is happening in the whole of Latin American. "What has happened here is merely political, to avoid Correa's participation in Politics, and mainly in the 2019 campaign," Correa stated.
"In October Moreno said he wanted to see me imprisoned, since then I have had 13 criminal proceedings because they have taken justice over. They could not show any corruption carried out by me and they will never be able to prove it."
On Wednesday, the national Ecuadorean Judge Daniella Camacho is holding a preparatory session to determine if Correa should go to trial for what has been called the Balda Case, for the alleged kidnapping of Fernando Balda. Former President Correa spoke exclusively with teleSUR to explain what is happening in Ecuador.
"I do not expect anything, Ecuador is outside the rule of law," former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said exclusively to teleSUR. In Ecuador "we don't have a Constitutional Court, the judges of the Judiciary Council have been unconstitutionally replaced in favor of my political enemies, the (General) Prosecutor is the only one in charge, he is there only to persecute us."
Correa stated that he doesn't believe in the Ecuadorean judiciary system, and that he does not expect to get any justice. "The fight will continue at the international level and we have advanced a lot," however Correa highlighted that "at the international level, Ecuador has been ridiculed. Even the Interpol ignored the arrest order issued. "
Correa is sure that if he was in "Ecuador I would also be in jail," as is former Vice President Jorge Glas. "All my solidarity goes to Jorge Glas, who trusted in a judicial system, that failed him."
"What we have to understand is that this is part of an international strategy. But the world looks away. How outrageous are the international hypocrisy and double standards? If I had done to an opponent what they did with Lula we would already be invaded. If we had broken the constitution as this government has broken, we would already be sued all over the world. In Ecuador there is a coup d'état, there is repression, there is torture. The world must know this situation that is part of a global strategy, as they can not beat us in the ballot box they apply lawfare."
