The decision will be handed down within 24 hours and, in case it is approved, it must be fulfilled immediately.

The defense team for Ecuador's Vice President Jorge Glas will present a habeas corpus appeal Sunday before the National Court of Justice, according to his lawyer Eduardo Franco Loor.

The appeal is based on a protection established in the Ecuadorian Constitution that "seeks to free anyone who is deprived of liberty in an illegal, arbitrary or illegitimate manner by order of public authority or any person; as well as to protect the life and physical integrity of persons deprived of liberty."

Glas is expected to appear in court since the constitution mandates that the judge call the "person deprived of their liberty" before the court.

The decision will be handed down within 24 hours and, in case it is approved, it must be carried out immediately.

The vice president has been held for 12 days in a jail in Quito, accused of being part of a corruption scheme involving the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, which officials allege paid US$33 million in bribes to the Ecuadorean government to win contracts.

Both Glas and his supporters have insisted on his innocence and have said there is no evidence to prove his guilt. Franco Loor stated that the "illegal and unconstitutional" character of the official's detention will be shown.
