Ecuador Qualifies for Copa America Quarterfinals

Ecuador will proceed to the quarterfinals for the first time in seven Copa America tournaments.

Ecuador easily beat Haiti Sunday during a critical game for the South American team, who looked to make it the quarterfinals for the first time in decades.

The country had to defeat their rival by at least two goals in order to move on and ultimately won 4-0.

Ecuador had been eliminated after the group stage in the past six editions of the Copa America but finally broke that streak Sunday after soundly defeating an underwhelming Haiti squad.

Ecuador will play the United States on Thursday.

Ecuador faces Haiti Sunday in the Copa America tournament, with the South American country eager to end a long-running streak of early exits at the regional soccer tournament.

With two losses, Haiti has already been eliminated from the tournament, but Ecuador must win by at least two goals in order to proceed to the quarterfinals.

Failing that, their hopes will depend on the outcome of the Brazil and Peru match being played later Sunday. Ecuador and Peru tied during their matchup.

Ecuador has been eliminated after the group stage in the past six Copa America tournaments.

Ecuador will play Haiti at 5:30 p.m. local time in Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, one of the largest venues in this year's tournament.

The Copa America is Latin America's most important soccer tournament and the 2016 edition is the first time it is being held outside of South America. Organizers of the tournament however, have faced heavy criticism over a series of errors and high ticket prices.
