Ecuador's national bus and transportation union, Fenacotip, says the government owes the organization over US$79 million.

The National Federation of Public Transportation for Passengers of Ecuador (Fenacotip) announced that it will hold a 24-hour national strike on Tuesday starting at 12:00 AM.

Fenacotip, Ecuador's national union of inter- and intra-provincial bus companies, says a strike is necessary because the federal government is not "effectively controlling informal and illegal transportation" of locals and tourists within and between provinces.

The union disclosed that bus companies are "losing 30 to 40 percent of their income," adding that the government is yet to pay out subsidies the bus companies were promised several years ago, for offering discounts to senior citizens and students.

Fenacotip, in a formal communique, listed several other reasons for holding the nation-wide strike, including lost income upwards of US$79 million, for not implementing systematic hikes to transportation fees.

The company advised the public that buses will be parked along highways in a show of solidarity and public awareness. The transportation union warns that other measures may be taken if the demands are not met.

The strike will not affect transportation within cities, only across city and province boundaries.
