The strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador in decades has left a wake of devastation killing hundreds and injuring thousands.

Key Facts So Far:

- The Ecuadorean government has said at least 659 people have been killed by the April 16 earthquake, 40 are still missing and over 17,600 still injured.

- More than 29,000 people have been displaced and cared for in shelters scattered around the coast.

- The earthquake was of 7.8 magnitude, and more than 800 aftershocks have rattled Ecuador.

- Cemeteries in Ecuador's coastal city have reportedly reached maximum capacity and authorities are working to prevent a health crisis.
