Cotopaxi, 50 kilometers south of the capital, exploded twice in the early hours. The government says this does not signify an erruption is imminent.

Ecuador’s Cotopaxi volcano — the second highest active volcano in the world — exploded twice Friday morning, spilling ash onto nearby towns and as far away as the capital Quito.

The government’s risk secretary said this does not mean an erruption is imminent, according to local daily El Telegrafo.

While warnings of high activity have prompted calls for a national emergency to be declared, tourists have still been scaling the mountain as normal for treks to the summit, as well as biking tours.

teleSUR will keep you updated on the developments.
