Maximum sustained winds were recorded at 125 mph and the National Weather Service warned that some areas could be soaked with up to 30 inches of rain.

A downgraded Hurricane Lane lashed the eastern region of Hawaii's Big Island Thursday. The hurricane dropped from a strong Category 4 to 3 before making landform in the U.S. territory.

On Thursday, the Category 3 storm had sustained wind of 120 miles an hour, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported. Lane, which dumped about a foot of rain on the Big Island, is the first storm to threaten Hawaii in decades, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Lane's eye passed about 250 miles southwest of the Big Island on Thursday morning.

"Regardless of the exact track, life-threatening impacts are likely over many areas as this strong hurricane makes its closest approach," the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecasts that portions of the significantly weakened storm could still make landfall on several of the islands by late Friday. The hurricane has also increased the height of waves and could prompt strong winds, CBS affiliate, KGMB, reported.

Hurricane warnings were issued for all the Hawaiian Islands and U.S. President Donald Trump called a state of emergency.

Maximum sustained winds were recorded at 125 mph and the National Weather Service warned that some areas could be soaked with up to 30 inches of rain. “Lane has the potential of bringing the state of Hawaii serious and perhaps record damage,” AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.

Hawaii was last directly hit by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, which caused some US$3 billion in damage.
