Rosello said the worst hurricane to hit the U.S. territory in more than 90 years directly killed 19 people and caused around US$90 billion worth of damage.

The announcement comes after U.S. president, Donald Trump's visit to the island who went to the U.S. territory to survey the damage.

Before the updated toll was announced, referring to the official death, Trump said, "Sixteen people versus in the thousands," Trump said. "You can be very proud of all your people."
