Cuba's Jazz Communicator

Published 8 July 2015

“The only thing that calms me down is music.”

Telmary Diaz is a beautiful young woman with amazing talent and whose music has exceptional visibility.

Diaz has been regarded as Cuba’s most successful hip-hop artist. However, she humbly refers to herself simply as a “jazz poet and communicator.”

The rapper, who learned the artform on the streets of Cuba, actually had aspirations in journalism before she discovered an inner desire to express herself through music.

“I discovered that I was a communicator. If my purpose is to communicate, then this is a good way to do it,” she said.

On this week’s episode of teleSUR’s original series, Interviews from Havana, host Cristina Escobar chats with Diaz on her introduction and transition to hip hop, the atmosphere of the music industry when she first started, and her hopes in a genre that is only now seeing a rise in the number of women entering the industry, which had been dominated by men for decades.

“When I started, women were just for background vocals and for dancing..not the face of a band.”

Take a look at the full interview! It’s all new!
