Cuba Meets with Tillerson to Discuss Diplomat Attacks

The Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla has met the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to discuss the attacks reported by U.S. diplomats in Havana.

In August, the U.S. State Department reported that U.S. embassy staff — as well as five Canadians — in the Cuban capital experienced unusual audio disturbances.

Rodriguez indicated that these reports were being handled by the highest level of the Cuban government and an investigation was underway.  

Rodriguez also said that Cuba had implemented additional security measures to protect U.S. officials, according to a statement from Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The minister reaffirmed that Cuba had not been involved with any attack against a U.S. diplomat and said the decision to remove two Cuban officials was unjustified.

Investigators are yet to find proof that the Cuban government was involved with the health issues reported by the embassy staff, said the minister.

In August, a Canadian official said they had no intention of taking diplomatic action against Cuba, with whom it has enjoyed good relations for many years.

A source close to the investigation said U.S. officials in Cuba "have never suspected the Cubans as perpetrating these events."
