Costa Rica's Ministry of Environment and Energy said the head of the ministry, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, met with the president of the Fondo Verde during the assembly and received the support of the organization for the ambitious infrastructure project.

Manuel Rodriguez went into the meeting in Vietnam seeking support from international organizations for the project, which he said could be a near-future reality for the country's citizens with enough international support.

The project would likely involve cooperation between state and private businesses from several different countries, including China, Spain, Switzerland and Italy.

The total investment is estimated to be US$ 1.6 million, including construction costs of the physical lines and associated infrastrucutre.

The passenger train would connect an 80km route with high-speed electric rail between Cartago, San Jose, Heredia and Alajuela, and would be a major boost to the country's public transport system.
