The Israeli paramilitary policeman quelled unrest of a crowd of about 50 people hurling rocks at the officers by shooting at the crowd. Ahmed Arimawi was shot dead in the encounter.

"Dozens of rioters hurled rocks at security forces injuring a border police soldier," said an Israeli military spokeswoman, as reported by Al Jazeera.

"In order to prevent an escalation of violence forces responded with riot dispersal means, and fired toward main instigators," she added.

According to Palestinian media reports, Ahmed Arimawi is the son of Hazem Arimawi, who was recently released from Israeli prison after serving for 15 years on charges related to "security."

At least 231 Palestinians have been killed in violence at the hands of Israeli forces in Israel, the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip since October 2015.
