Martinelli, 66, was "evaluated immediately by medical personnel in the prison system and paramedics," said a spokesperson from the Panamanian prison system, in a statement.

According to his lawyer, Carlos Carrillo, Martinelli is being held in the hospital's coronary unit, and is receiving rigourous testing. He is said to be in a stable condition.

Martinelli was the country's president between 2009 and 2014, and has been held in detention on the outskirts of Panama City since being extradited from the U.S. in June of this year, after allegations that he used public funds to carry-out surveillance on over 100 political rivals during his time as president. The prosecutor, Harry Diaz, is demanding the stricken Martinelli serve 21 years in prison.
