Thousands are expected to take to the streets Thursday to protest the government's social and economic policies and ongoing violence.

Colombia's largest labor unions, student organizations and social movements have begun a nationwide strike to protest against recent economic policies, mass inequality and starvation in rural communities, and ongoing violence in the country, despite the ongoing peace talks between the government and FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, in Havana, Cuba.

The strikes began at 9 a.m. local time, in both rural and urban areas, including the cities of Bogota, Medellin, Popayan and Bucaramanga among others.
