The Communist Party of Colombia, PCC, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, announced on Thursday that both groups will seek to create a political alliance ahead of the country’s 2018 elections.

The decision was revealed at the opening of the 22 Congress of the PCC, which was attended by several FARC members, AFP reported.
Both leftist groups “will seek an agreement so that there is only one candidate defending that project of peace,” PCC President Jaime Caycedo Turriago said.
“The left is expanding and will continue to expand because new forces are emerging. What we have to do is to enlarge and increase the consciousness of unity,” Caycedo added.
When asked about prospects for the 2018 presidential elections, FARC guerrilla commander Carlos Antonio Lozada said that his group’s priority is “the need for unity among all sectors” and “peace in our country’s future,” according to AFP.
FARC leader Ricardo Tellez echoed Caycedo and Lozada’s statements, saying that the PCC and the FARC are “all anxious for the development ... of the new party or political movement.”
The PCC’s 22 Congress began on Thursday and will come to an end on Sunday. Dozens of representatives from leftist social movements, including the People’s Congress and Patriotic March, attended the event’s kick-off.
