John Jairo Velasquez, also known as 'Popeye,' was arrested in Medellin on charges of extortion and conspiracy.

"He was trying to recover assets, money that he left in the hands of narcos years ago," an official told El Tiempo.

The Prosecutor General's Office, the Medellin Police Department, and U.S. Immigration Agency (ICE) cooperated in the investigation.

Popeye had previously served a 23-year sentence after admitting to murdering more than 250 people, and was released in 2014. He has since written books and appeared in videos on YouTube, where he has gained a cult following.
