The announcement was made by Tan Kefei, a China's Defense Ministry spokesperson, answering a question regarding that issue. Tan urged the U.S. to comply with its commitment to not supporting Taiwan's independence.
The Chinese official continued to say that if the plans to visit Taiwan persist, China's defense will take actions to avoid and stop any foreign interference and the "Taiwan independence" separatist scheme. This is part of safeguarding China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
By its side, China has been clear about its position regarding Pelosi's potential visit to Taiwan, saying that the country strongly opposes it, said the official."If Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan, it would seriously violate the one-China principle and the stipulations in the three China-U.S. joint communique, seriously harm China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and seriously damage the political foundation of China-U.S. relations," said Tan.
The spokesperson said that should the visit happen, it would significantly damage the China-U.S. relationship, worsening tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
