As part of preparations for the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, local party committees are studying "On Contradiction" and "On Practice," two seminal Marxist philosophical works by Mao Zedong, the state-run Global Times paper reported.
Party committees are studying the books with the hope that they will help officials gain a better analysis and understanding of modern Chinese society, in order to shape party policy.
“Theories written in the books say that specific conflicts should be analyzed to identify the major conflicts in our society, and lay the philosophical foundation for the contemporary world,” Zhang Xixian, a professor at the Party School of the CPC said to the Global Times.
According to Xixian, the upcoming 19th National Congress of the CPC, to take place in October, will debate and shape Communist Party policy, with the goal of achieving what they say is the current stage of Socialism to construct “a moderately prosperous society.”
On Contradiction and On Practice are among the most famous philosophical works by Mao Zedong, and have been widely read and studied by revolutionary movements, philosophers, and historians around the world for their unique interpretation and application of the Marxist concept of dialectical materialism.
Having been written in 1937 by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, this year marks the 80th anniversary of the globally influential texts.
Some committees are also engaging in study of "The Governance of China", which is a collection of texts and speeches outlining current President and Chairman Xi Jinping's vision of constructing “socialism with Chinese characteristics.”
