Sebastian Lelio's film "A Fantastic Woman" continues to harvest awards. In February, it won Best Screenplay at the Berlin Festival in Germany, and on Wednesday it was pre-selected for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
Of the 92 films competing in this category, only nine were pre-selected. The German "In the Fade," the Swedish "The Square," the Russian "Loveless," the Hungarian "On Body and Soul," the Israeli "Foxtrot," the Lebanese "The Insult," the Senegalese "Félicité," the South African "The Wound" and the aforementioned Chilean film.
"A Fantastic Woman" was rated as "luminous" by Variety magazine and as "extraordinary" by the Hollywood Reporter. This week, the film got a spot among the films competing for the Best Iberoamerican Film Goya Award, and among the five nominated for Best Foreign Film Golden Globe.
The plot tells the story of Marina (Daniela Vega), a transexual woman who is faced with the sudden death of her partner Orlando (Francisco Reyes), a mourning that his family prevents her from living in peace.
By Jan. 23, Latin Americans will know if the film will be one of the five nominated in the Hollywood contest.
The Golden Globes ceremony will be held on Jan. 7.
