The president of the NAACP branded the killing of nine Black people at the hands of a white a man an “act of racial terrorism,” at a press conference on Friday.
Reverend Cornell William Brooks, head of the civil rights organization for ethnic minorities, said that he expects that Wednesday’s tragedy will be treated as an act of terror.
Brooks also called for the state’s Capitol building to remove the Confederate flag, which many consider a symbol of white supremacy.
Indignation over the flag has hit social media with several hashtags,#takedownthatflag, #takeitdown and #ConfederateTakeDown, used to pressure South Carolina to remove it.
bc symbolism of institutionalized racism and violence against black people will not be tolerated #ConfederateTakeDown pic.twitter.com/mQhOn3UHgD

A massive Confederate flag burning needs to take place. Right on the South Carolina Capitol building steps. #ConfederateTakeDown

If SouthCarolina is sorry, the only way to prove it to me would be to #TakeDownThatFlag & treat all ppl equal, if not it's a waste. @cspanwj
