Dutch police officials have refused to link the shootout in Amsterdam with the terrorist attacks in Brussels.

Dutch officers fired a warning shot during the arrests of three suspects at Amsterdam's central station on Tuesday evening, an official police tweet said.

A police spokeswoman declined to provide further details. No one was injured during the arrests.

A witness told a Reuters reporter at the scene he heard a shot being fired and saw a suspect running. The area around the central station was cordoned off and there was a heavy police presence.

"I saw a guy running and a lot of police on top of him," said Armen Zadoorian.

Local reports suggest that the arrested had guns and were perpetrators of a drive-by shooting, although these reports have yet to be confirmed.

The arrests come on the same day over 30 were killed in terror attacks in Belgian capital Brussels that targeted the city's largest airport and a metro station.

There is no confirmed connection between the Amsterdam incident and the Islamic State group claimed assaults in Belgium.

According to other witnesses armed police approached the three men and fired the shot when they fled on a Volkswagen Golf and were chased through Amsterdam. They were later arrested in the street near the station.

A police spokeswoman declined to provide further details and it is not clear whether the raid is related to the earlier Brussels terrorist attack.

But a Dutch Police's official account tweeted that the country's border with Belgium will be "intensively guarded for as long as necessary."
