Caribbean Keeps Watch As Hurricane Season Continues

After battling one tropical storm after another, the Caribbean can breathe a sigh of relief, meteorologists say, reporting clear skies and hurricane-free waters.

However, weather experts have cautioned that with two months left in the hurricane season, there is still a chance of a few more tropical systems, particularly in the western Caribbean, while strong thunderstorms are a guarantee.

“Multiple factors will be in place that may favor several tropical systems to come about into the middle of October,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said, explaining the warm tropical waters create the ideal temperatures for system formations.

However, Sosnowski reassures that hurricanes like Harvey, Irma and Maria will continue to diminish as the weeks progress.

Meteorologists caution those in Central America, Cuba, the Bahamas, Mexico and the southeastern United States to prepare for further extremes of weather and expect variances until around December.

Late last week, the Weather Channel forecasted a storm in the western Caribbean Sea, which is taking form as an oceanic gyre, creating a low-pressure area in the region that can lead to the development of a large tropical cyclone. Meteorologists, however, say it’s not entirely certain that the storm will generate a cyclone.

It is expected to create heavy rains across Belize, Honduras, Cuba, and parts of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula.

Water temperatures in the area are currently in the mid- to upper 80s, the Weather Channel adds, mentioning that they are about two to five degrees above average.

AccuWeather’s Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski reports around four more tropical storms, three of which could develop into hurricanes with at least one ranging as a Category 3 or higher before the 2017 season comes to a close.

“Historically speaking, we have seen the systems try to develop, especially so in the western Caribbean, down in the southern Gulf of Mexico and off the east coast of the U.S.” said Accuweather forecaster Mark Mancuso.

This year’s hurricane season has wrought serious damage throughout the Caribbean, as 13 tropical storms have passed through the region, eight of which rapidly transforming from tropical storms to hurricanes with five growing to become major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher.

The ring of tropical island nations survey the billions of dollars in reconstruction ahead with thousands left homeless.

The most recent hurricane, Maria, left 90% of Dominica without food, power, or shelter, inspiring members of the international community to band together and assist the hurricane-stricken nations.

On Friday, U.N. to launch a campaign to raise US31 million for the “badly battered” Caribbean nation.

UNICEF also announced Thursday that it would increase the humanitarian aid for women and children in hurricane-stricken regions.
