Caracas Prepares to Host 2nd 'Biennial of the South'

The Venezuelan Ministry of Popular Power for Culture, VMPPC, and the Arts Institute of Images and Space, AIIS, are preparing for their second "Biennial of the South: Pueblos in Resistance," which will take place between Dec. 3, 2017 and Feb. 25, 2018.

The nearly three-month-long event will include conferences, exhibits, workshops and artist talks, all held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas.

Artists have been invited from all over Latin America and the Caribbean including the Bahamas, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Haiti, Uruguay and Trinidad y Tobago. In addition, artists from China, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Namibia, Palestine, Senegal, Syria and South Africa will also be exhibiting.

In total, the event will host over 100 national and international artists who will exhibit their murals, photographs, textiles, paintings, documentaries and performance art at the museum.

The biennial will pay homage to Trinidad y Tobago, recognizing the nation’s artistic and intellectual accomplishments.

Morella Jurado, general director of the AIIS, said the event "is a space for discussion and reflection of the struggle against hegemony and imperialism suffered by artists since colonial times.”

The biennial theme is "dialogues about art and politics: debates of the senses.” 

Event organizers said the event offers a “critique of the capitalist system, offering an alternative via art and cultural society. It questions power structures within the international art circuit and creates space for international artists that resist rich countries’ interventions and monopolization via the artistic world.” 

The first Biennial of the South in Caracas was held between November 2015 and February 2016.
