These court cases were dealt with by Sergio Moro, a former judge whose actions were revealed as biased against Lula.

On Thursday, Brazil's Supreme Court (STF) annulled two court cases against ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. These lawsuits were about alleged acts of corruption related to the purchase of land for the Lula Institute and the hiring of remodeling work on a farm in Sao Paulo.

These trials, which kept the left-wing leader in jail for 19 months, were dealt with by Sergio Moro, a former judge whose actions were later revealed as biased against Lula.

STF second chamber addressed the claims of Lula's defense regarding Moro's impartiality, which was evidenced when right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro appointed Moro as his Justice Minister. The STF plenary later ratified this decision by 7 votes to 4.

Lula's lawyers stated the ruling in favor of the former President restores his innocence and makes clear that Moro acted partially and politically motivated when condemning him.

The annulation also returned Lula’s political rights, which enables him to stand as a candidate in 2022 presidential elections.

Although the Workers' Party leader has not fully confirmed his presidential candidacy, Lula assured that he would appear at the next electoral process if necessary to defeat Jair Bolsonaro.

So far, the Judicial Branch has annulled 13 lawsuits that were improperly formulated against Lula. These cancellations have been made considering factors such as the inconsistency of the complaints and the procedures.
