Bolivia Book Fair to Honor 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'

The International Book Fair in La Paz, Bolivia is set to pay tribute to the groundbreaking book, ''One Hundred Years of Solitude,'' Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's masterpiece, on the 50th anniversary of its publication.

Edited for the first time in Argentina in 1967, the novel is included in the list of the 100 best books of the 20th century, with more than 30 million copies sold worldwide in over 44 languages.

Garcia Marquez, who was awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature, is credited with internationalizing the Latin American genre called magical realism with the publication of "One Hundred Years of Solitude," as well as other novels.

Latin American countries are among the guests of honor to the FIL this year, in a recent initiative to unite the different countries to share the same space in showcasing their work, said Alejandra Alvarez, who is curating the event.

From the Latin American and Caribbean Cultural Group, Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will be participating in the fair.

In addition to the presentation of books, there will be readings of poems, lectures, tributes and concerts are held at the stand, among other activities, Alvarez told Prensa Latina.

The book fair in La Paz began on Aug. 2 and will run until Aug. 13, at Chuquiago Marka, an exhibition center located in the southern zone of the capital city.

Founded in 1996, the FIL has been one of the most important cultural events in the country and aims to promote the Bolivian publishing industry, foster reading habits and establish contacts with national and international authors.
