Three white men have left a college student in Iowa with stitches on his lips and other injuries after they called him the n-word and beat him up.

A 19-year-old Black student from the University of Iowa was severely beaten last week in what the family is calling a racially-motivated crime.

Marcus Owens was leaving an off-campus pub last Saturday when three white men appeared, yelling the n-word, and punching him. The attack left Owens with a damaged eye socket, his front teeth knocked out and almost a dozen stitches on his lips.

Both the local police as well as campus police are looking into the incident. Owens has reportedly told his family he thinks one of the attackers is a student he’s seen around campus.

"This is 2016, you shouldn't expect this to happen," the freshman said.
