Belgian PM visited King Philippe Tuesday to announce he was stepping down after his coalition - the Flemish N-VA, quit a week ago in a dispute over signing the U.N. migration pact, according to the Belgian parliament.

Francophone centre-right former prime minister Charles Michel Tuesday stepped-down as the leader of Belgium, after his Flemish nationalist coalition partner New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), angered by his decision to sign a UN immigration pact, withdrew support from the government.

Belgium: Far-Right March Against UN Migrant Pact Turns Violent

After the right-wing coalition abandoned Michel 10 days ago, Michel had claimed he'd head a minority government, but after the violent protests from the N-VA - the largest party in parliament, and after losing a no-confidence vote, Michel was forced to step-down.

The former prime minister angered the nationalist party after signing the UN immigration pact, that would see an influx of migration to Belgium. Several Flemish right-wing parties subsequently organized a march in the nations' capital, Brussels, which turned violent and resulted in "clashes and disturbances breaking out in which police used tear gas to suppress the crowds," according to TeleSUR English.

Michel told parliament, "I have decided to resign and will immediately go to see the king" which prompted a palace official to issue a statement, saying, "The king holds his decision in abeyance."

According to Euro News, "Michel could be asked by King Philippe to stay on in a caretaker capacity until then, but with limited power. The Belgian king may also speak to other political leaders in a bid to resolve the issue."
