Banana Plantation Massacre Is a Myth: Colombian Politician

Colombian Democratic Center's Maria Fernanda Cabal came under fire for saying the banana plantation massacre is a historical myth propagated by a communist agenda.

Over 70 political science graduates from the Universidad de los Andes blasted Cabal, citing the statement as being offensive to the victims of the tragedy.

The remarks, which Cabal made during a 'W Radio' debate, elicited backlash after it trended at number one Twitter.

The graduates expressed that misrepresenting or diminishing the historical significance of such an event could foster discord among the Colombian people.

"As political scientists graduated from the University of the Andes, we reject the irresponsible assertions of the Representative to the Chamber, María Fernanda Cabal... in addition to being unfounded, seek to divide and polarize the country in a historic moment, " the group expressed in a letter.

In 1928, banana pickers organized a strike to bring attention to demanded formal written contracts, eight-hour working days, six-day working weeks and an end to the practice of paying wages with food coupons, according to the History Channel.

In the document, the group said Cabal – who is also a political scientist graduated from the Universidad de los Andes – "discredits the profession."

But, Cabal responded to the criticism by uploading a video reaffirming her statements.
