At least 23 people died and 34 more were injured Sunday in Honduras when a bus and a transport truck crashed on the outskirts of the capital city Tegucigalpa, local media reported.
The accident took place about 6 miles outside of Tegucigalpa, on the highway heading south to the city of Choluteca.
Authorities told local media that the truck driver was speeding and driving out of control when the collision happened.
The truck driver, identified as Jose Eliseo Aguilar Meza, was detained for an investigation, but police confirmed he was not drunk at the time of the crash.
Honduran newspaper La Prensa described the collision site as painful and disturbing scene, adding that the accident left people dead in the “most cruel way.”
Transit Director Leonel Sauceda told La Prensa that the truck took a curve at high speed, losing control when “supposedly the brakes failed and he couldn’t control the vehicle.”
Witness reported that the transport truck was traveling at high speed and zigzagging on the highway, according to local media.
