Venezuelan Vice President Jorge Arreaza has visited Caribbean countries hoping to find a solution to the Guyana border controversy.

All governments visited on a tour of the Caribbean nations backed resolving Venezuela and Guyana’s territorial dispute with peaceful dialogue, Venezuelan Vice President Jorge Arreaza said Monday.

Arreaza, who has visited several countries hoping to find a solution to controversy over the countries’ boundaries, said that peaceful Bolivarian diplomacy was of great importance in finding a resolution to the dispute with the Guyanese government, following the looting of the country by the British government centuries earlier.

“We thank the allied governments of the Caribbean that received us. They all recognize the importance of Peaceful Bolivarian Diplomacy,” Arreaza posted on Twitter. “All the friendly governments share the need to resolve the controversy with Guyana through international law and dialogue,” he added.

During the tour of allied nations, including Grenada, Dominica, Barbados, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago, the Vice President discussed the history of Venezuelans in the disputed territory known as Guyana Essequibo.

The territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana long predates the current government of President Nicolas Maduro. The decades-old disagreement was reignited earlier this year, after oil giant Exxon Mobil released results of an exploration project conducted unilaterally with Guyana.

Maduro argued the Guyanese government should have consulted Venezuela before going ahead with exploration, and accused Exxon Mobil of trying to force a wedge between the two South American countries.
