"Any tribute we make to the Commander can only be this humble, a small token of our gratitude," the Argentine group said of the hefty headgear.

A giant replica of Fidel Castro's emblematic olive-drab cap has been crafted out of sheet metal as a tribute by workers in the Argentinian town of Carmen de Areco.

The oversized nod to the leader of the Cuban Revolution was flown from Buenos Aires to Havana by the Association of Cuban Residents in Argentina and the Argentine Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MasCuba). It weighs 30 kilos and stands one-and-a-half meters long by 50 centimeters high.

The group hopes the cap will be given pride of place at the annual May 1 International Labor Day parade in Havana, after which it is due to be transported to the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in Santiago de Cuba, where Castro's remains are interred.

"Any tribute we make to the Commander can only be this humble, a small token of our gratitude," MasCuba said. "He is still alive today, he is present with his ideas and thoughts, not only in Cuba, but also in Latin America, we are Fidel.”
