Argentine Presidential candidate Daniel Scioli of the left-leaning Victory Front party (FpV) met with Cuban leader Raul Castro in Havana, highlighting the importance of bilateral relations between the two nations.
“We have hope that solidifies the relationship between Cuba and Argentina that has been promoted under Nestor Kirchner and President Christina Fernandez can continue,” Raul Castro stated Wednesday.
Scioli, who is running to succeed President Cristina Fernandez on the incumbent's FpV ticket, expressed his “respect” for the Cuban leader for “having defended the Cuban people and his ideals.”
Scioli’s visit comes days after the reopening of the Cuban embassy in Washington.

Prior to their meeting, Scioli held talks with Jose Ramon Balaguer Cabrera, the Communist Party's chief of International Relations, and former public health minister on the island.
According to polling agency Giacobbe & Asociados, Daniel Scioli is gaining momentum ahead of October's election, with 41.4 percent of those surveyed saying they have a “positive image" of the politician, compared to from 33.9 percent in March.
