Argentine Mapuche Leader Calls Off Search for Missing Daughter

After 72 hours of searching, the 19-year-old daughter of Argentine Mapuche leader Moir Millan has been found, the mother announced on Twitter Sunday.

"My daughter appears to be fine. At the moment we only have had phone contact, but I'm on a trip to meet her now," Millan wrote.

The terrified mother notified police of her daughter's disappearance after she went missing outside the Cordoba bus terminal Thursday evening. The activist turned to social media, calling on the community to assist in the search.

"I am very grateful to everyone of you for the support you've given me," she said, requesting that, after the news, her daughter's photos be deleted out of respect for the 19-year-old's privacy and protection.

A series of death threats received prior to her daughter's unexpected disappearance caused Millan to file a complaint with the prosecutor's office an as well as a habeas corpus to put an end to the unsolicited violence.

On Twitter, Millan said, “Today December 23 together with the lawyer Melina Cassola has filed with the prosecutor's office the complaint for the whereabouts of Llanka Millan in Córdoba Capital, at the same time and given the levels of political persecution and aggressions received in the last time towards Moira Millan and family also made a writ of habeas corpus.”

As the lead coordinator of the Movement of Indigenous Women for a Better Life, Millan’s activism has been targeted on several occasions. She has denounced the attacks, attributing the violence to the Mauricio Macri administration which has continued to persecute Indigenous activists in the region.
