South American Cup champions Chile were knocked out after a 3-0 loss to Brazil

Argentina, along with Uruguay and Colombia have finally secured a place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while Peru has moved into a playoff against New Zealand.

Barcelona star Leo Messi led his team to a 3-1 win over Ecuador, while Uruguay hammered Bolivia 4-1 to clinch a spot. 

A 1-1 draw between Colombia and Peru secured a place for Colombia in the World Cup finals, and sent Peru to the half-spot secured for the fifth place team from South America

Brazil already qualified earlier defeating two time COPA America champion Chile by a score of 3-0, sending the Chileans home after placing below Peru due to goal differential.

Paraguay, the only other Latin American countries who were fighting to qualify to play in the 2018 World Cup, was eliminated after a 1-0 loss to Venezuela.

In the Concacaf division, Panama gained a spot by defeating Costa Rica and Honduras won over Mexico.

The United States meanwhile will remain absent for the first time since 1986 after losing 2-1 to Trinidad and Tobago.

While millions cheering for Syria saw their hopes dashed as the country that was competing for its first ever World Cup soccer tournament lost to Australia.
